RioTalk Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 8, 2026
RioTalk helps you practise speaking English. We collect as little as possible.
What stays on your device
- Your profile (first language, goal, level), daily progress, streak and review cards.
- Your voice. Speech is turned into text by your phone's own speech recognition (Apple's on iPhone, Google's on Android); audio is never sent to us. On Android, Google's speech service may process audio on Google's servers when the language isn't downloaded to your phone; see Google's privacy policy.
- Free roleplay conversations, which run on your device (Apple Intelligence on supported iPhones) or from built-in scripts.
What is sent when you use RioTalk Pro
- Only after you agree in the app: the text of your roleplay replies, the mission you are practising and your level are sent to our server to create the character's answer and grammar tips. The same applies to sentences you ask to translate or explain.
- Our server forwards that text to Google's Gemini API (a paid service). Under Google's paid API terms, this data is not used to train or improve Google's models.
- The character's spoken reply is turned into a voice the same way, by Google's Gemini API.
- Your App Store or Google Play subscription is checked with Apple or Google to confirm Pro access. We keep a daily count of Pro replies, and a list of up to three app installs per subscription, keyed by anonymous store and install IDs. Daily counts are deleted after 3 days.
- We do not store your conversation text, and our logs never contain it.
Voices and lesson updates (everyone)
- To play natural voices, the app asks our server for audio of lesson sentences (for example a character's line or a grammar example). Only the lesson sentence and mission are sent, never anything you said. The voices are created by Google's Gemini API, then stored on our server and on your phone so they play instantly next time.
- The app checks our server for new lessons from time to time and downloads them. No personal data is sent.
- Like any website, our server sees your device's IP address when the app connects. We use it only to prevent abuse (rate limits) and don't store it.
Optional account and leagues
- You can use RioTalk without an account. If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive an anonymous identifier from them; we do not store your email address. A Sign in with Apple token is kept only so we can revoke the sign-in if you delete your account.
- Your profile holds the name you choose, your age range (not your birthday), a Rio avatar colour and whether to appear in weekly leagues. Accounts are for people aged 13 and over.
- When signed in, the XP you earn (amounts and times only) is sent to our server for the weekly league. Leagues show only your chosen name, avatar colour and weekly XP, and only if you opt in. Learners aged 13–17 are never shown publicly.
- You can delete your account at any time in the app (Progress > Settings > Delete account). This removes your profile, sessions and league history from our server straight away.
Community (sharing your practice)
- Your voice stays on your phone unless you choose to share a conversation. When you tap Share (adults with a profile only), we receive the conversation's text, recordings of your own lines, the mission, your level and a practice score.
- If you tap “Share outside RioTalk” on your own practice, anyone with that link can listen to it in a web browser. The page is hidden from search engines, and you can turn the link off or delete the practice at any time.
- Your latest free talk for each mission stays on your phone, so you can share it later from the mission page. Deleting your account (or the app) removes it.
- Before a shared conversation is shown, its text is checked by our AI provider (Google Gemini) to keep the community friendly for people aged 13 and over.
- Shared conversations show your chosen name and avatar colour. Others can listen, clap, report or block; there are no comments and no photos. Learners aged 13–17 can listen and clap but cannot share and have no public profile.
- You can delete a shared conversation at any time; deleting your account deletes all of them, with their recordings.
Ads (free learners, only if you choose)
- Free learners see an ad card at the bottom of Today and between community practices, and can watch a short ad to unlock an extra mission. Ads never appear during a lesson or a conversation, and RioTalk Pro has none.
- The ads come from Google AdMob, which is only started for free learners when an ad is shown. Ads are not personalised, nothing is used to track you across apps, and ad content is limited to what suits teens.
- Google receives what it needs to show and count the ad (for example the device model, a rough location from the network address, and whether the ad was shown). See Google’s privacy policy.
What we never do
No tracking, no personalised ads, and no selling of your data. Accounts are optional.
Children
RioTalk is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their personal information.
Your choices
You can use RioTalk without Pro, decline cloud conversations at any time in the app, and delete all on-device data by deleting the app.
